GOODBYE 2017: THE YEAR AHEAD

2017, year in review, 2018, resolutions, new year resolutions

We’ve now said goodbye to 2017, and what a year it’s been. As a society, we’ve had some pretty terrible things happen throughout the year: Theresa May, Manchester Arena bombings, London Bridge attack, Grenfell tower to name a few. Aside from all the horrible occurrences, we’ve suffered from over the year, on a more personal level 2017 has been a year I’ve enjoyed quite a lot. So similarly to last year, I thought I’d talk through some of the highlights of my year.

Slimming World:

Back in January 2017, I decided to join Slimming World in order to get myself back on track and to shift some of the weight I’d gained over the past few years. Within a few months, I managed to lose nearly 1 stone and a half. I felt a lot better about myself, my clothes fit better and I started to feel like myself again. I stopped attending class around October time due to time constraints, and I have slowly started to gain some of the weight back but I’m still around a stone lighter than I was this time last year.

Self Confidence:

I’m not saying you need to lose weight to be confident in yourself, but for me, the extra couple of stone I’d gained really did affect my self-confidence and how I felt about myself. Over the year I’ve found myself gaining more confidence, enjoying what I see in the mirror and experimenting more with my clothes. 2017 certainly has been the year that I’ve discovered colour and injected some personality into my style.

Tattoo:

I finally found the courage to get my first tattoo! I’ve wanted a tattoo since I was around 17/18 – thank god I didn’t get one that young as the ideas I had were shocking. It’s always been something I wanted to really think about and make sure it was something I loved. I found myself a tattoo artist whose work I loved and finally took the plunge in May to get a floral bouquet tattooed on my inner bicep. I’ll admit it did hurt, but not as bad as I imagined it would. I struggled more with the afterwards as it felt like a sunburn and the gloopy slimy stage did make me feel a little queasy.

Travel:

I’ve never been somebody who has travelled large amounts, but this past year I managed to visit quite a few new places. In May I headed off to Liverpool with Yasmina to attend the CarnLIVal event and had the greatest day. The weather was stunning and the Liverpool bloggers welcomed us with open arms. I also headed along to Leeds for the In Colourful Company meet up – this is an online community of colourful and creative ladies who own their own businesses, work freelance and generally want to connect with similar women and make friends. I was also lucky enough to be invited along to Hoar Cross Hall¬†for a girls sleepover and had the most amazing time getting pampered and treated like a queen. Finally, I travelled to Amsterdam for our first holiday abroad as a couple and well and truly fell in love with the city.

Ethical Living:

2017 was the year I’ve started thinking more about the what I am consuming and the effect it’s having on the planet. This began with making the effort to shop secondhand a lot more, I’ve spoken about this previously but I’ve tried to make the effort to choosing secondhand first before heading along to the high street. I also made the decision to switch all my beauty products to cruelty-free, this has led me to discover some amazing new brands, whilst also feeling better about my choices. My biggest decision came in July when I decided to stop eating meat and become vegetarian. This has since grown and I reduced the amount of cows milk, eggs and cheese I was consuming.

So 2018 is here and it’s time to think about what I’d like to achieve in the year ahead. I do like to set myself some goals in January – I don’t like to call them resolutions as that always makes them feel like a chore. Just some goals I’ve put in place to help myself be the happiest I can be over the next 12 months.

Take better care of my body:

This is an extension of my goal from last year. Even though I managed to lose nearly 20lb in weight, it has slowly crept back on again and I want to get control of this again before I’m back where I started. I’m beginning the year by taking part in Veganuary which I’m also hoping will help me improve my diet so I’m living off more fresh fruits and vegetables and less pizza and crisps. I’ve set up a little Instagram account to track my progress if you’re interested in following along.

Read more books:

I read more books in 2017 than I have done in previous years, and this is something I want to continue into 2018. Lee and I regularly had ourselves little reading evenings – which made a nice change from just sitting in front of the television night after night, and this is something I’d like to do more of this year. I have a huge pile of books I’d like to read, it’s just making the effort to spend my spare time reading more and watching less Netflix.

Work harder:

2017 has been a funny year workwise, my schedule has been all over the place with lots of overtime at work and even a three-month stint doing some freelance marketing work. Because of this, I’ve felt like this blog has been a little all over the place this year. I’ve been really proud of the content I have created, but I’ve just not been consistent enough with how often I do that. One of my biggest aims this year is to get my ass working as hard as I can and make Alice’s Wonder Emporium the best it can be.
