Rum and Reggae at Turtle Bay! [AD]

If you know me at all you’ll know I am a huge lover of food. I think I’ve gotten to that age now where I’d happily choose a nice meal out and a few cocktails over an evening clubbing, so as you can imagine I was over the moon to be invited along to the press launch of a brand new restaurant opening up in Newcastle.

I love trying new types of food so I was excited that Newcastle would be adding Turtle Bay, a Caribbean restaurant full of jerk spices and gorgeous rum cocktails to the restaurant list. When we arrived I was amazed at how friendly everybody was – I honestly don’t think I’ve been welcomed so warmly when entering a restaurant. We were immediately introduced to everybody with smiles and handshakes and greeted with a fabulous rum punch.

After a mooch around the restaurant, we were all seated with our cocktails to begin sampling the menu. We had small samples of what felt like the entire menu and I was amazed at the amount of food we received and how delicious everything was.  For starters, we received a platter with Sweetcorn Fritters, Jerk Chicken Wings, Pepper Roti and Duck Rolls. I always thought I could handle a fair amount of spice,  but oh my goodness,  my lips were tingling. I’ve had spicy food before that was just all heat and no flavour but this was something else entirely. Super tasty with a strong spicy kick that didn’t overpower the flavour.

I have to apologise as the starters were the only food I managed to get photographs of as everything else was so tasty we all just gobbled it up too quickly. Following the starters we sampled an array of main course meals, including Goat Curry, their veggie curry named ‘Rastafarian Run Down’ which was outstanding, and if that wasn’t enough we sampled the jerk chicken with sweet potato jerk fries, fried dumplings, sweet plantains and even pulled pork, salmon and jerk chicken toasties.

Now as you can imagine at this point we were all pretty stuffed – BUT THEN THERE WAS PUDDING. Grilled Pineapple, chocolate brownie and rum and raisin bread pudding which just about popped the button of my skinny jeans. After the food had swiftly been devoured my table ended up staying for a while afterwards just enjoying the atmosphere and the cocktails and basically putting the word to right.

We did try on Monday night to get a table for a belated valentines meal, but as you can imagine it was totally fully booked. But I have since discovered they do take out! Like it couldn’t get any better already! You can see their restaurant menu here and their take-out menu here. I know we will definitely be visiting again and I have a feeling this may become our new favourite eating establishment.
