Shopping locally is a huge passion of mine, and I love being able to support North-East based companies as much as I can. So when I came across B.Collective last year, I was excited to find a brand that is not just North-East based but also helps supports women who have dealt with difficult circumstances and helps them develop skills and grow in confidence.

B Collective is part of The Millin Charity. They work with a diverse range of artists and designers and create ethical products including organic cotton t-shirts, reusable coffee cups and cotton shopping bags. All the proceeds go straight back into helping support the women they work with.

Back in September they held their official launch party, which I had planned on attending. But unfortunately at the last minute I had to pull out and was no longer able to pop along. I was gutted! I loved everything the brand stood for and was really looking forward to going along and learning more about their products and the ethos behind the brand.

Luckily for me, B.Collective recently got in touch and asked if I would be interested in trying out some of their products and see what I thought about them.

I opted for the tote bag in black, which is part of their debut collection Same Difference. The collection was designed by Corinne Lewis-Ward, who carried out a series of different workshops for a group of the women supported by The Millin Charity.

Inspired by their diverse heritage she created a print involving a range of different prints linking to the different cultures. This includes patterns linking to Africa, Islam and Scotland – highlighting the diverse range of women whom she worked alongside.

This pattern has then gone on to be created into three different products. Organic cotton T-shirts and canvas bags, which are screen-printed right here in the north-east, a travel mug, which has been made in a zero waste facility in the UK.

As somebody who now owns more tote bags than normal handbags at this point in time, I feel I’m pretty good when it comes to knowing what I like in a tote bag.

For me personally, I enjoy a tote bag that is reasonably weighty and made of a fairly thick material. Bags like this I find these last better, wear nicer and have the added bonus of not being a little bit see-through.

This is where the B.Collective tote bag delivers 100% – the cotton is really good quality, without weighing the bag down and making it bulky to carry. It’s the perfect size for throwing in my purse, keys and kindle before I rush out of the door to catch my metro.

I’m finding I’m reaching for this the majority of the time, as it’s not only practical but also looks more presentable.

Follow the B.Collective on their social media to see their newest collections, and stay up to date.
